POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Work in a multi-disciplinary environment to develop concepts, identify creative solutions to customer requirements, and assess feasibility of solutions. Involved in the full spectrum of product development (concept, design, implementation, test, production, and support). Design custom RF communications systems that meet unique customer requirements on power, weight, size, modulation, and protocols, while leveraging commercial technologies where possible. Perform detailed RF design (eg, filters, amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, detectors, modulators & demodulators, InterconnecT). Integrate RF sub-systems with new and existing product platforms and devices.

Required Skills/Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (2 years of work experience may be substituted for each year of degree-level education). 4+ years of experience in RF design. Must have a strong foundation in RF propagation, link analysis and end-end system design. Must be proficient in RF circuit design and module and system level design/test/troubleshooting. Must have experience with schematic capture for RF/microwave, knowledge of RF properties of materials, and understanding of basic assembly procedures. Prior experience with current wireless technologies (802.1x), SATCOM, UWB, etc. a plus. Must have good written and verbal communication skills. Top Secret security clearance.

Travel: Occasional travel (1-2 weeks in duration) to assist in conducting hands-on equipment testing and field evaluations may be required.

FUNCTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS:

Monitor daily unit performance; assist in troubleshooting; and, identify improvement opportunities (eg - safety, quality, productivity, efficiency). Coordinate planning and scheduling of work in assigned area. Authorize, write work orders and set priorities for work based on Unit needs. Ensure the safety and integrity of equipment through monitoring, testing, inspection, and maintenance. Eliminate weak equipment where possible and upgrade when obsolete. Set up spare parts requirements for existing and new equipment. Set up preventive and predictive programs, interpret results from surveys of equipment and take appropriate actions to correct deficiencies. Control costs and schedule work to meet cost and business goals. Work with operations on all aspects of improvement of existing and development of new processes. Work with Manufacturing Manager and Process Engineers on improvement of existing and development of new processes. Increase unit productivity through troubleshooting of process problems – both short and long term. Provide technical assistance, process development and designs to Plant Engineering for project work. Initiate, justify and execute capital projects. Monitor capital work during the construction phase for adherence to design, completeness, and quality of workmanship. Monitoring equipment, identifying problems, planning/executing repairs and necessary improvements. To increase the reliability of the facilities, preventive maintenance programs are developed and executed.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

Power Systems Instructor

Responsibilities:

Define and develop technical course curriculum with input from the Curriculum Advisory Board.

Plan and lead technical course development activities for SEL U.

Consult with customers to develop long-term training plans that meet customer needs.

Lead projects to develop customer training and course materials while meeting cost, schedule, performance, and quality goals.

Participate as instructor in technical courses.

Apply new learning technologies and processes to training project development and training delivery.

Provide input into the strategic management of SEL University and initiate supportive actions.

Evaluate course results and effectiveness and improve courses based on the data.

Create, follow and improve applicable processes.

Actively model SEL values and culture of quality and excellence

Qualifications:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering

Minimum five years relevant experience with electrical power systems or industrial systems practices

Detailed knowledge of electrical power system protection

Working knowledge of system automation

Familiarity in applying SEL protective relays to utility and/or industrial power systems

Ability to work independently, accepting complete ownership of assigned responsibilities

Proven ability in project management and leading technical training programs

Excellent technical training, speaking and writing skills

Willingness to travel in order to serve as an instructor of SEL U courses

Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

Background check results satisfactory to SEL

Preferred Qualifications:

Electric utility, consulting or system integrator experience

The Senior Protection Engineer position is with the Atlanta Branch of Engineering Services. This division provides high quality, innovative and high value systems and services using SEL technology.

Senior Protection Engineer

Responsibilities:

Maintain a high level of technical expertise in electric power system protection or power system automation.

Maintain a high level of knowledge of SEL equipment and solutions to electric power system protection and automation.

Lead in performing event report analysis, product test schemes, protection scheme design and relay coordination services.

Prepare and present successful proposals for SEL equipment, services and systems

Act as a primary customer contact on technical matters.

Lead project teams to resolve customer concerns and foster customer satisfaction

Complete assigned work within agreed upon schedule and budget at the highest level of quality

Lead in training and assisting customers with the installation, commissioning and operation of protection systems, both on-site and from SEL offices.

Assume Project Management role on assigned projects.

Follow and improve applicable processes.

Provide support for other SEL marketing, sales, application engineering and development activities.

Qualifications:

B.S. and/or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience

Over twelve years working knowledge of electrical power systems, protection practices and philosophies

Detailed knowledge of protective relay applications

Knowledge in SEL products

Excellent technical training, speaking and writing skills

Willing to travel nationally and internationally up to 25%

Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
